HOW TO REPLACE A SCHWINN AIRDYNE BOTTOM BRACKET?

May 10, 2007

The bottom bracket cartridge has failed on my 1990-era Schwinn Airdyne. I can get a new one but can't find any step-by-step instructions on how to remove and replace it, whether special tools are needed, etc. This does not look like an easy job. Any advice?

Jim:
Lots of people report problems with Airdyne bottom brackets—not just with their failure, but with maintenance. If you've never replaced a bottom bracket, you've picked a challenging machine on which to practice.
The good news: One of the faithful from the Airdyne fan club (get it?) put on-line repair instructions here.
It wouldn't surprise me, however, to learn that your machine has a slightly different configuration. If so, learn more about replacing different kinds of bottom brackets from the helpful folks at Park Tool.
