DRIVING DIRECTIONS FOR BIKE RIDES

July 24, 2006

Do you know of anything on the Internet that gives cyclists maps and riding directions, similar to the MSN driving directions?
I'd like to do more traveling on my bike, but I wouldn't know how to get across the state without taking the interstate highways. It can be difficult to decide if a street or road is safe for bicycle travel by looking at a state roadmap. Thanks.

Bob:
Mapquest, it its driving directions, lets you exclude highways (under “advanced options” for the ending location). Turns out this option does cause Mapquest to include what planners call “high-speed arterials” (highways on which you can bike) but not interstates.
