HOW TO START A CAREER IN PROMOTING BICYCLE TOURING?

December 14, 2005

I am interested in exploring careers in promoting bicycle travel (and participating from time to time) and wonder if you could direct me to organizations here in the U.S. that are involved in this subject.
In addition to being a member of Adventure Cycling Association and the League of American Bicyclists I have done some investigating of my own, stumbled upon local advocacy groups, but would like to know more.
What other organizations are out there? How can I align myself to work for such organizations? What are the possibilities for employment? Any information you have concerning this topic is appreciated! Thank you for your time.

Jennifer:
I’ve a couple ideas for you. First, check out the National Bicycle Tour Directors Association. If you become a member you get to network in what I’d call a target-rich environment.
For a somewhat more direct approach, look at OutdoorIndustryJobs.com. You could cast about for jobs, but, methinks just as important, also see what kinds of people want (or have) jobs or careers like the one you seek.
